Two Gentle Hands and the Pain is Gone

BY Nancy Janiola IN , No comments

I have had a very bad leg cramp last night. When I say bad, I mean real bad and terribly painful that it really made me cry. Imagine feeling such discomfort one leg after the other in the middle of the night? My moaning woke my daughter, Kate up. Though the light was out, I can tell from her voice how she worries for mom. She asked me what's wrong, then she got up and offered her two gentle little hands to rob my legs. Isn't that so sweet?

This morning before I rose from bed, she gave me another round of back and leg massage. For a 12-year old hands, she has done such a splendid job. I can't thank her enough. She is such an angel.

Legs Cramps

One of the common, frustratingly painful night discomforts is the cramping of the legs. Mine, not one but two (both legs) used to cramp and it was really painful.

Scientifically, leg cramps at night is generally due to an exaggeration of a normal muscle reflex. When you turn during sleep, you contract your calf muscles and stretch their tendons. This stimulates nerve stretch receptors in the tendon and sends a message back to the spinal cord, telling the calf muscles to contract.

Calcium deficiency is the most common cause of leg cramps.
