Little Tips to Tip the Scales Down

BY Nancy Janiola IN , 4 comments

Take heart -- you can lose weight without suffering. By making small changes in your daily routine and diet, you can drop 14 pounds in a little more than two months -- without feeling deprived.

 photo 902338885-Dieting-couple_zps59f74576.jpg
It's simple math. For every 3500 calories you expend above what you take in, you lose a pound. Pare 350 calories from what you normally eat and burn an extra 350 a day, and you'll be 14 pounds lighter in 70 days.

Best of all, you'll probably find this kind of gradual approach to weight loss more painless than trying to stick to a strict low-calorie plan.

When you're done shopping for cheap guitars, now's your tome to follow these simple suggestions and you'll not only lose weight -- you'll also create new habits that will help keep you trim in the future.

Tune In to Your Body

Are you truly hungry when you eat? Or do you tend to snack out of habit without paying attention to your appetite? "If you're eating when you're not hungry, those are usually extra calories that your body does not need.  Instead, "check in" with your body to confirm that you're physically hungry before you eat.

Reportion your portions

Many of us tend to eat more servings of fat-free foods such as cereals and grains than we realize, says Dr. Kristine Clark, Director of Sports Nutrition at Penn State University. "People have heard the message that fat matters, but not the message that portions of food matters," explains Clark. Check the food packaging for suggested serving size and compare it to what you're actually eating -- you may be surprised.

Jelly - Belly Woes

BY Nancy Janiola IN , 1 comment

And here I am again... feeling awful and to think the Holiday season has just officially begun. Just thinking alone of how much I needed to lose is already killing me.

Obviously, there's no use in browsing bunch of different weight loss programs  over and over from the internet as most likely these articles will just add up to the guilt I've been feeling.

Okay, what I need now is a proven effective way on how to work this jelly-belly out from my system - not for anything else other than just to feel good and healthy again. I know my so unhealthy lifestyle is what causes this trouble and not to mention my eating habit and poor choices of  food sometimes. I am one of those millions of people who spend hours and I mean long hours in a day behind the desk with less time to exercise. (If it was williams allegro 88-key digital piano, I wouldn't mind.) Perhaps,  the only time I get to move around is when I do my not so energy-consuming chores. I even barely go out to breathe fresh air if not for personal errands or a visit to my sister and nieces which I also rarely do.

The feelings I get are becoming so undesirable and being stressed over it is definitely not helping so I really need something to get started with ASAP before it's too late and before I run out of clothes to wear... again!

Absolute NO(s) and YES(s) on Weight-Maintenance Stage

BY Nancy Janiola IN No comments

So you successfully did it! Thanks to all those strenuous workout sessions at the gym, the regular walk at the park, the helpful articles, weight loss programs and tips from the web and most importantly, the discipline. Integrating utmost discipline in your weight loss program is like being dedicated to everything that you do in life such as waking up each morning to make it to your biometric time clock system operated job on time.

So you have now reached your goal -  your desired weight, that is. The next and final stop... the maintenance stage.

According to nutritionists, no given meal should exceed a total accumulated value of 3 during the weight maintenance stage. Observe the following rules to help you slim and lean.

  • Always choose "good" carbohydrates over "bad" carbohydrates

  • Never combine "bad carbohydrates with lipids (fats) in the same meal

  • Eat fiber-rich food at every meal

  • Eat a lot of protein, choosing foods that are high in protein and low in fat

These four rules are the bases of the weight-maintenance stage - or perhaps it's best to say they are the bases of your eating habits for the rest of your life! If you follow these rules, you can be assure that you won't regain the weight that you've successfully lost.

Absolute NOs

No Alcohol/ No Fried Foods
No Processed Foods / No Smoked Foods
No Coffee / No Refined Flour Products
No Sweet (pastries, etc) /No Dairy Products
No Nuts/ No Chocolates
No Sugar/ No Soft Drinks

Absolute YES'

Broiling/ Baking
Grilling/ Fish and Chicken (skinless)
Fresh Fruits/ Complex Carbohydrates
Green Leafy Vegetables/ Drink lots of Water
Low Salt Foods/ Whole Grains
Herbal Teas/ Natural Organic Supplements

Remember, attaining your ideal weight was all worth the effort it took, so don't let what you have worked for so hard to go to waste. Having the ideal weight that is dreamed by many means more energy, guilt-free feeling and above all more success and achievement.

7 Foods Every Woman Must Eat

 photo Healthy-Eating-Habits-_zps2e4a1dec.jpg
Here's good-food news: The more you munch on healthy eats, the less you need to worry about Friday night's fat burger and fries. Harvard's medical school has found that women who routinely nibble nutritiously slash their risk of dying from the usual culprits, including heart disease and cancer. To up your odds of living a long and healthy life--despite occasional blow-outs --make sure you regularly include these 7 nutritional powerhouses in your diet. They're the cream of the healthy-foods crop.

1. BERRIES
Ounce for ounce, berries have more protective plant antioxidants than almost any other food. These compounds not only lower your disease risks, they help prevent memory loss. Since berries are high in fill-you-up fiber, they may also help curb weight gain.

(Other popular fruits that are rich in antioxidants are blueberries, kiwi and raspberry but since all these are seasonal apart from being quite expensive, local tropical fruits like oranges, citrus, lime and the most common banana would do.)

2. SALMON

Sure salmon is a prime source of omega-3s, the healthy fats that fend off heart disease and maybe more, but are you aware that a mere 3 ounces of the fish serves up 170% of your daily vitamin B12 and more than 80% of your D.

3. LEAFY GREENS

It's almost impossible to meet your nutritional needs without eating dark leafy greens, from spinach and romaine to collard greens and chard. They're huge sources of fiber; vitamins C and K; folic acid (a B vitamin that guards the heart and memory and fights birth defects); lutein, a vision protector; and four essential minerals: calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium.

(Other common fibrous leafy greens are lettuce, cabbage and the local pechay.)

4. WHOLE GRAINS

They have up to 96 percent more fiber, magnesium, zinc, chromium and vitamins E and B6 than refined grains. This nutritional powerhouse helps prevent the same health problems that refined grains help cause: heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hypertension and even obesity.

5. NUTS

They're excellent sources of protein, magnesium, B vitamins and E--trusty fighters in the war against heart disease and cancer. Yes, nuts are high in fat calories, but their fat is the heart-healthy kind. Replace junky snacks with them and you won't gain an ounce.

6. GOLDEN VEGGIES

Just one serving of fiber-filled, deep-yellow-orange vegetables supplies five times the beta carotene you need daily to lower your cancer risk, defend against colds and other infections, and protect your skin from sun damage. The potassium in these veggies also keeps your heartbeat in sync and your blood pressure down.

7. YOGURT

Low- or no-fat plain yogurt is a terrific source of B vitamins, protein, calcium and --if it has active cultures--the healthy bacteria known as probiotics, which crowd out disease-causing germs.

The payback part? As one of the Harvard researchers would likely tell you, eating a diverse diet that is low in calories and high in nutrients can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger.

5 Pounds and Counting

BY Nancy Janiola IN , 1 comment

April is when I started running back and this time with a new addition to my weight loss regimen – keeping track of my calorie-intake. Sounds ambitious but I find it really challenging. I aim to meet my goal in 4-6 months, I’m supposed to lose at least a pound or so a week. I’m on my 5th week and I indeed five pounds lighter now. Way more to go.

I got really challenged when my now sister-in-law, Melodie asked me to be in the entourage as one of the matrons of honor on their wedding. I was reluctant at first. I didn’t like the pressure of looking for our own dress to wear at the wedding when I still have an existing problem to address too. But after I found an appliance service man to fix my AC weeks before the wedding, I thought I would reconsider. I eventually enjoyed the dress hunting, the fitting and most especially becoming a part of the entourage of yesterday’s wedding.

Why Wearing Proper Activewear Matters When Exercising

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , , 21 comments

Whether you’re a starter or have been doing the regular exercise, wearing appropriate clothing matters.

For a start, it helps you feel comfortable and supported. I tell you what, exercising isn’t and will never be easy. You don’t want to make it even more difficult that what it already is by wearing inappropriate clothes that easily ride up, slide down or show more than you want. Light-colored fitness clothes are best as they absorb less heat compared to dark clothes.

fitnessclothes
When you want to workout, you want to workout! Know when to breathe and know that wearing appropriate workout clothes will help you do that and will therefore allow you to effectively execute the steps from start to finish.

Remember, you don’t have to go to the gym to dress up properly when exercising. For years I have been doing my exercise routine at home. I can wear what I want without having to worry of how I look. Most of the time I wear tight fitting clothes that are made of cotton-helps me move easily.

Unlike me, if you’re a trendy type of person, opting for stylish fitness clothes can be done provided it won’t compromise comfort.

Cheap ones don’t always pay off. But if you know how and where to avail coupons, that should get you quality guaranteed fitness clothing with a markdown.

Cloudburst is Unstoppable and so am I!

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , 10 comments

It has been raining for the past two weeks now here on my side of the planet – making me miss my morning jog. Now I’m stuck indoor and with no other choice but to get off my butt and do the old drill even if the sound of the pouring rain outside makes it hard to resist the tempting bed. No I’m talking about my couch actually. It has been a while since I last slept on my bed.

I certainly don’t know when the raining would stop and my muscles would probably get stiff again if I wait till the weather decides to change its course. So off my butt and on to sweating some fats away…

Party season is here before we know it. I can’t be feeling bad over what other people might think of how I look when I know there’s something I can do to help it. Not that I want to look hot and sexy before everyone's eyes but it’s rather about feeling good about myself and nothing else. Or does it make a difference? LOL! When you feel good about yourself, everything follows. I have it proven many times. In fact, it is when I feel good that motivates me to blog as much as I could. ;)

Looking to Run Soon

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , 10 comments

Since the dawn of my fat loss quest, I have been looking to run… if only I have someone to do it with. Abdominal fat as many of us are aware of is one of the hardest to lose. Running is an excellent fat burning exercise according to health experts which also targets abdominal fat to a great extent, thereby reducing fat around the waist, hip and abdomen. It can be considered to be one of the most effective abdominal fat removal exercises.

Recently a friend of mine who is also struggling to lose fat brought up the idea of running. She asked if could run with her and the word “SURE” came out in a flash from my mouth. Finally, I will be able to run soon. We are yet to figure out when to start but it’s probably going to be any day from this week… or maybe tomorrow… who knows?

jogging

I had my pair of running shoes ready and definitely my camera too. I know, inconvenience, right? But sue me, I am still a blogger and none of those important chapters of my fat loss journey I want to miss so I will work around it. I will be fine.

Am I excited? Definitely! This is something I so long to do and now here’s my chance. Good luck to me!

20 Pounds More and I’m Done

BY Nancy Janiola IN 10 comments

I may really not need to lose that much. I think I will be fine weighing at least a hundred and thirty pounds instead of aiming for 120. Doing my weight loss regimen, I also kind of drawing inspirations from people I see around and what they do to keep their body in good shape.

Jillian Michaels’ 30-day shred instructional video is the newest addition to my workout exercises collection. It is a combination of cardio and strength – the most effective way according to her to lose fat and tone the muscles in a shortest amount of time. Michaels weighs 130 pounds and she looks just perfectly fit. So I imagine myself, if I will aim for 120 pounds that would mean I would look way smaller than her. I think that will be a little too much for a weight loss. Right now I weigh 66 kilograms – over 10 pounds smaller than I was before I started the 30-day shred workout about two months ago… and still counting.

I need to Lose Fat, Not Weight!

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , No comments

Oh no, just yesterday I made quite a tale of how good it feels to lose weight. But is losing weight really the issue I want to address? This has got me thinking. Perhaps I need to re-evaluate my goal.

Yes even if I’ve seen results in what I do, my search on how to shred pounds and to hopefully do it right never stop. And last night I came across few articles about Losing Weight vs. Losing Fat! Again, that had me wondering. Am I really doing the right thing here? I must have confused losing weight is equivalent to losing fat. God, I was so WRONG! And that’s probably the reason why I can’t get rid of belly fats all the way no matter how hard I try.

So I’m supposed to lose fat, not weight!

Now here’s the thing…

Our body is made of lean body mass and fat. Muscle is the most active tissue that keeps you active. It has been shown to greatly improve insulin sensitivity. Lack of insulin sensitivity basically causes weight gain and will increase your body fat. While fat is just your storehouse of energy. Obviously we don’t want to lose muscle mass because study says it increases metabolic rate and burn up 15-20 times more calories than fat. Excess fat however, just sits around our body and that is what we want to get rid of

How to ensure you lose fat and not muscle?

A lot of misguided dieters (and I’m not gonna lie, I used to be one of them) have that theory that the less you consume, the more you lose weight. We should know by now how much of a crappy thinking that is, right?

Apply a balanced meal. It has always been a proven key to losing weight. Forget restricting calories but do not consume more than what your body needs. Enforcing weight loss with so many diet restrictions causes a lot of personal stress and is rather not sustainable. And don’t forget to couple your diet with physical activities like strength training and cardio workout – that should keep your lean body mass intact.

So this is it…I need to lose fat, not muscle mass! And perhaps it’s also now time not to think so much about the weighing scale and start using the measuring tape instead. ;)

Way to go!!

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , No comments

So yesterday morning I woke up and realized it’s another weekend. How I wish I have ways to make the most out of it like I always do for a long time now other than just sitting around just like what I do on ordinary weekdays doing the same thing. So for a change, I’ve decided not to allow boredom to take place before I could even start the day – I stretched out, stood before the mirror, seizing myself a bit and changed – getting ready to kick off the day with a workout!

I spent a total of 4 hours and it felt really great! ;)

Thanks for the free instructional videos – truly a life-saver. Ever since, I couldn’t imagine myself being in a gym hanging out with other goers while trying to lose weight. I’m way better off doing it at home and by myself using these videos that I get to download for free. The only downside though is when you tend to get lazy and skip doing it when you’re supposed to. Instance like this is likely to happen because you have nothing to lose anyway- gym fees wise- except that you have to make it up double for yourself. But you know you can always combat issues like such – just a matter of discipline and sticking to your goal.

Hmm, let's see...

Original Weight: 72 kilos or 158 lbs.
Last Bathroom scale check:  66 Kilos or 147 lbs.
Weight Goal: at least 54 or 120 lbs.

Way to go!!

In Pain but I'm Certainly Not Quitting

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , , No comments

Did I actually ask how will my muscles react to that new workout routine I am trying to set for myself recently? Well that’s just downright stupid! Of course I knew I wouldn’t be able to get up the following morning. I’ve been there… not once but many times. You know the feeling as if big boulders are up inside your body – making you immobile or walk funny. Imagine how painful that is? Worst is it could cause you unwanted headaches and fever.

I used to just treat it with alcohol rubbed all over my body before retiring to bed at night but that doesn’t seem to work for me now – leaving me with no choice but to gulp pain pills if I want relieved. But even taking pain reliever can’t guarantee an instant relief- meaning I have to endure the pain for however long it last. Well, it’s been two days. I was hoping I could go on today but even thinking of that simple jumping jack would already make me want to pass out. That’s how bad the pain I feel is as of this writing. I don’t know how much longer do I need to suffer but one thing for certain… I sure won’t quit!

New Workout Routine

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , , 1 comment

I know it sounds a little silly of me saying how I’ve started doing the workout again because this is definitely not the first time that I did say that. After a month or so of enjoying (well not exactly) what I’ve shredded while in a state of depression, I decided to just do it again and guess what…with a new addition this time.

Yesterday, while attempting to organize my hard drive, I found this Jillian Michaels’ 30-day Shred video. I wasn’t sure if I downloaded it myself some time ago or someone did but I watched it anyway, find it useful and so I thought I would try it out. No, I didn’t just thought of trying it out in fact; I went a little giddy to just do it.

Photobucket

And since I really don’t have a full plate on most of my mornings, I thought it would be ideal to start a day with an exercise so this morning I decided to redesign my routine.

Jillian Michaels’ 30-day Shred instructional video is divided into 3 levels (20 minutes for each level). I like how the course is designed to tone the muscles and abs. It’s a slow-paced exercise but the use of hand weights is what makes it challenging. Boy, the steps appeared to be just so simple but no they’re absolutely not! Good thing I still managed to do Billy Blanks’ 60-minute Basic Bootcamp after.

Hmm, let’s see how my muscles will respond to this new routine tomorrow. ;)

Top 10 Things to Know About Belly Fat

BY Nancy Janiola IN , , No comments

Read this article this morning and I thought it might be of interest to you as well.

1. Belly Fat is Worse Than Other Fat
It's true: Belly fat is the worst kind of fat -- and not just because of the way it looks in beach pictures. Deep belly fat (the kind that makes for a classic beer belly) actually churns out proteins and hormones that make all kinds of bad things worse, including LDL (lousy) cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and triglycerides. It's also a player in insulin resistance and red-alert-causing inflammation. Makes that fat on your thighs seem downright charming, no?

2. Dropping Belly Fat Isn't Just a Calorie Game
The type of food you eat affects whether belly fat stays or goes. In a study, two groups of people ate the same number of calories. One group got their carbs from refined grains, the other from beans and whole grains. The latter group lost more belly fat. You can, too! Replace two servings a day of refined grains (e.g., white bread, white pasta) with a couple servings of satisfying lentils, chickpeas, or kidney beans.

3. Certain Condiments Can Make Belly Fat Vanish
In a study in which obese people consumed either 1 to 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or a placebo each day, the apple cider vinegar group shed more body and belly fat than people who took the placebo -- even though everyone was on the same diet and did the same workout.

4. Sitting Promotes Belly Fat
Belly fat prefers when you sit, so if you want to make the bad stuff around your waist scram, it's time to get up and move. Just 3 hours a week of aerobic exercise (e.g., walking, jogging, cycling, elliptical training) can bust belly fat. You just need to do it at an up tempo, not at window-shopping speed.

5. A Thousand Crunches Won't Do the Trick
Crunches can firm up the muscles under your fat and keep your core strong, and that's important for many reasons. But they won't make that fat magically vanish on their own. For fat erasing, you need regular aerobic exercise, such as walking.

6. Green Tea Has a Special Belly-Busting Effect
Exercisers who drink green tea all day lose more belly fat than exercisers who don't. It could be that catechins, a compound in green tea, may boost your body's calorie- and fat-burning mechanisms. It takes about 7 cups a day, but that's not as much as it sounds. A large glass of iced tea often contains about 3 cups of liquid.

7. TV Remotes Have a "Bye-Bye Belly Fat" Button
Chase away belly fat by pushing the "off" button on your TV remote. People who cut their TV time in half consume 100 fewer calories a day. That's a pound every 35 days without even trying!

8. You Really Can Blame Your Boss/Sister/Loud Upstairs Neighbor
The higher your stress, the bigger your waist. Stress makes the hormone cortisol climb, which makes you crave high-calorie snacks that get stored in your belly as fat. You don't have to quit your job, fight with your sister, move, etc.

9. Flat-Belly Success is Measured in Inches, Not Pounds
Ditch the scale in favor of a tape measure. This is a better way to monitor belly fat because everybody's weight tends to fluctuate a little from day to day.

10. You Really Can Eat More and Still Shrink Your Belly
Studies have shown that people who eat six small meals a day have smaller waists than people who eat two or three large meals a day. Of course, "small" is the key. To nix belly fat for good, don't sustain it with sugar, syrups, and saturated and trans-fats. Instead, sustain the rest of you with whole grains, lean proteins, fiber, exercise, and stress control. Your waist's loss is your life's gain.

And the dropping continues...

BY Nancy Janiola IN No comments

So did I say I dropped five pounds in just over a week? Well, make that ten now or a little bit more! And mind you that’s without stressing me out doing the hard work-out I used to do. I don’t know how it happened but it seems like that daunting event in my life have done so much in my favor. I can tell I am totally over now with what took place a month ago. And no, I didn’t expect for it either… it just happened. And to think it has been over a month already. I thought I would just gain back what I’ve lost in as fast as it dropped knowing I tried so hard not to allow depression consume my sanity. But what do you know… I lost even more as the days went!

Hmm, I wonder how Science could explain that but there’s no doubt… to me it’s a pretty good thing. How I wish it would continue to drop like 10 pounds more then I will be the happiest. :D

TaeBo Basic Bootcamp Floor and Kickboxing Moves

BY Nancy Janiola IN , 16 comments

Among Billy Blank’s intense workout programs, TaeBo Bootcamp (Basic Training) is what I found the most difficult. Unlike the other programs it took me weeks to correspond to some of its heart-pounding moves.

Below are screenshots I took out from the instructional video that I am using.

Stretching.
No matter what your size is if you’re new to this stretching move, you will really find it arduous just like the rest of Bootcamp moves. It takes time to get limber and do exactly as they do on the photo below.
Strength.
Pushups for me is the most agonizing move I can hardly cope up with up until now. Good thing there’s modified way to do it. See what Billy is doing below? At a series of 4 sets, I do half of it using my knees and half with both legs fully extended.
Kickboxing. I fell in love with this move the moment I learned how to carry it out the right way. It feels like I went through a martial arts class. :D
Glute muscles exercise.
Lower ab exercise.
This and more of glute muscles exercise is what I so badly need! I mean I spend pretty much of my time sitting, doing my online job and barely move around – causing a nasty build up on my lower belly. Grrr… I hate thinking about it that’s why instead of two; I try to do TaeBo at least 4-5 times a week.
It’s not easy to workout. Billy says it all the time. It takes mind and will to get you going. No wonder why a lot of people quit. But remember… there are no shortcuts to anything worth having. If you’re focused on what you’re trying to achieve, determination is the key so do it now and do it right!

Out with the New, In with the Old

BY Nancy Janiola IN , 14 comments

I am referring to my regular workout routine. For the past year I do Billy Blanks’ 60-minute Basic Boot Camp Training – a combination of cardio, basic calisthenics and kickboxing. Using the instructional videos I’ve downloaded from a P2P site for free, I am able to do all these at home. Yes at home… and alone.

For some reasons, I am much more comfortable working out at home than in a gym. At home, I don’t have to worry about going to and back and things that has to do with it – weather, traffic, expenses and possibly some untoward incidents if you get unlucky. So at home, it is!
In my living room is where I used to alternately do the Basic and the Ultimate Boot Camp workout. But over time furniture and appliances that’s been added up narrowed down my space – preventing me from executing moves that requires space such as kick-boxing, jog walk and pushups. And so while thinking of ways to make things work for me, I just for the meantime; switched back to TaeBo Amped – a cardio and strength training. I did this for a year next to Billy Blanks’ Taebo Basic plus Aerobics.
If you want to lose weight fast and add muscles, Taebo Amped can be the best bet. I specifically do the 52-minute Fat Burn Accelerator. TaeBo Amped is designed for optimum fat burning and muscle building results. It is a high energy, sweat busting program so if you are the dallying type, this may not be for you.
